Job Description
Part-time Consultant at AAR-UNMC
Key Research Interests
Plant breeding – principally oil palm with some experience and interest on cocoa, chillies, tomatoes, maize and forages.

Breeding and selection strategies and methodologies including marker-assisted selection, transgenics, dihaploids for hybrid seeds and clones.

Field plot technique – experimental designs and analysis of field trials, statistical inference.

Discoveries
  • Developed: (1) the Dumpy-AVROS semi-dwarf oil palm hybrid variety which facilitates harvesting and extends the economic life of the crop, (2) the Dumpy.Yangambi.AVROS hybrid variety with improved high yield potential besides the dwarfing advantages, and (3) high yielding clones from tissue culture, with strong support from his very able tissue culture and plant breeding teams. These varieties have made and continue to make significant economic impact on the oil palm industry. (ref: Soh et al., 1981)
  • Suggested appropriate selection and breeding methods and strategies for the production of hybrid seeds and clones for oil palm (Soh, 1986, 1994, 1998, 1999; Soh and Chow, 1993)
  • Elucidated the inheritance of the resistance to chilli veinal mottle virus and started the genetic base for the development of the virus resistant ‘Cili Bangi’ chilli variety (Soh, Yap and Graham, 1976, 1977).
